Fernando Alonso sharply criticized Formula 1’s “Power Rankings,” dismissing them as subjective, irrelevant, and unworthy of attention.
Fernando Alonso criticized Formula 1’s “Power Rankings,” a highly subjective ranking that we have, in fact, chosen not to cover in our columns—and rightly so, according to the Spaniard.
After each race, a panel of five judges working for Formula 1 assigns a score out of 10 to the drivers, “removing the machinery from the equation.”
However, Alonso, ninth in the drivers’ championship despite driving what he often calls “the slowest or second-slowest car,” doesn’t even make it into the top 10 of the rankings.
“Sometimes, I see this ranking mentioned in some media. But it’s stupid and useless,” he said.
“I don’t even know what position I’m in. I see the top 10, and I’m not there—when I’m ninth in the drivers’ championship, sometimes with the seventh, eighth, or ninth car on the grid, I start to question it.”
“Then, I see Lando (Norris) and Max (Verstappen) tied on points, and I completely stop paying attention.”
It has been a tough season for Aston Martin, with car development stagnating. Alonso, 43, admits he is finishing this unprecedented 24-race calendar with some health concerns.
He also revealed he will not take part in next week’s post-season testing because he is “tired.”
“I’m happy the season is over. It’s been very long for everyone. Twenty-four races are very demanding, especially the last three.”
“We are working on next year’s project, but beyond that, there’s not much else. I hope that after the winter, we’ll be much more competitive.”
He emphasizes, however, that his motivation for Formula 1 remains fully intact.
“I’m somewhat used to not having the best car,” Alonso smiled. “I’ve only had that once in 25 years, with Toyota in WEC, so I’ve gotten accustomed to it.”
“I’m simply enjoying this part of my career. I still feel fast and motivated, and I’ll soon start working with people I admire, like Adrian Newey, Enrico Cardile, Andy Cowell. People I’ve competed against and now get to work with and learn from.”
“It’s a good time in my life and career.”
