Alonso Predicts a Tight F1 Battle in 2025

Alonso: “The Midfield is Catching Up to the Top Teams”

13/03/2025

Fernando Alonso expects the midfield to challenge the top teams, making the 2025 F1 season one of the most competitive in years.

Get ready for an intense 2025 season—Fernando Alonso predicts the grid is about to get a lot closer.

The Aston Martin F1 driver believes the gaps between teams will shrink next year, making for one of the most competitive seasons yet. According to him, while the top teams still have an edge, the midfield is closing in fast. But as teams continue learning about their cars, the pecking order is bound to shift.

“We see some positives in our car, but everyone is working hard, so it’s going to be an incredibly tight season. The midfield will get closer to the top teams. This track is very different from Bahrain—it’s smoother—so we’ll see which car adapts best,” Alonso said.

With limited pre-season testing, he expects the early race weekends to still feel like test sessions. “Each driver only had a day and a half in Bahrain, so FP1, FP2, and FP3 will still be a learning phase. We’ll see if we can put together a good weekend and score some points.”

Alonso also commented on the arrival of a key figure at Aston Martin. “I haven’t spoken to him yet, but from what I hear, he’s already met the team at the factory. It’s still early, but he’s excited about 2026. Hopefully, we’ll see some magic from him in the coming weeks.”

This season, Alonso will be racing against drivers who were born after his Renault championship years—but he sees that as an advantage. “They have incredible talent and speed, but they’re still learning. We don’t know how they handle overtaking yet, so we’ll have to build mutual respect. But as more rookies arrive, I benefit—I have a huge experience gap over them! Some of them have never even raced in the rain.”

Stroll Ready to Bounce Back After Illness

Lance Stroll wasn’t at 100% during winter testing, but he’s feeling much better now and is ready to hit the track in Melbourne.

“I just had a virus, a fever, the usual stuff, but I’m fine now,” the Canadian driver said. “I still managed to get some laps in, which was a positive. I’m excited for Melbourne—I have great memories here, and I love the track.”

For Stroll, the key to success this season will be steady progress. “It’s a long year. We need to keep improving race after race and get stronger as the season goes on. That’s the goal.”

He also shared his excitement about Adrian Newey’s arrival and the energy it’s bringing to the team. “It’s a huge boost for everyone. The whole team is feeling motivated and inspired. You can feel a spark of energy at the factory—it’s amazing.”

Stroll Ready for Melbourne After Illness Setback Lance Stroll shakes off illness from winter testing and feels confident heading into Melbourne, aiming for steady progress throughout the season.
