Fernando Alonso believes Adrian Newey’s arrival at Aston Martin F1 will outweigh Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari, emphasizing a designer’s greater influence.
Fernando Alonso stated that having Adrian Newey on his Aston Martin F1 team would have a greater impact than a top driver like Lewis Hamilton joining Ferrari.
In 2025, both Lewis Hamilton and Adrian Newey will represent teams different from those they’ve been with for over a decade.
The seven-time world champion has moved to Ferrari, while the design genius is taking on one final challenge in F1 with Aston Martin. But which of the two will bring the most to their respective teams? The Spaniard did not hesitate in his response.
“Adrian Newey will always have more impact than any driver,” said Alonso.
“Drivers come and go, there are 20 of us here trying to drive well, and we’ve all achieved things before reaching F1. I don’t know what Hamilton will bring or add to Ferrari, but it will surely be less than what a designer can contribute.”
It remains to be seen what Newey can bring to the AMR25, the team’s 2025 F1 car, which will be unveiled this Sunday.
“Adrian will be a free spirit; you can’t tell him what to do. The day he arrives, if he can help us with 2025, great. If he wants to focus only on 2026, that’s fine too. He wants to have a clear vision and doesn’t want to waste a single day. I’ve asked Lawrence (Stroll) several times, and he always tells me he doesn’t think we can control him.”
“If he sees that he can’t do anything quick or miraculous for this season, he’ll quickly shift his focus to 2026. There’s no time to lose—he’s already two months behind the others since he won’t be here until March.”
