Fernando Alonso emphasizes the need for patience with Aston Martin F1, stating Adrian Newey isn’t an instant solution as the team targets 2026.
Fernando Alonso stated that Aston Martin F1 cannot rely solely on Adrian Newey to get the team back on track.
Most paddock members now expect the Silverstone-based team to announce this week that they have secured the services of Red Bull’s technical guru.
“These are still just rumors,” Alonso remarked at Monza, after the race.
The two-time world champion had just told journalists that he was alarmed by Aston Martin’s current performance in 2024.
“We need to be patient and understand that the main goal is 2026. As a team, we must accept that we are not in the fight with the top four teams. They are the best teams for a reason, because they are far ahead of us.”
“But we are behind Williams, Haas, and sometimes RB F1. I think in this case, we need to raise our level. We must improve.”
Discussing his Italian GP, Alonso said he expected to finish 16th or 17th at the checkered flag – but he ended up “maybe my best race of 2024” and finished 11th.
“Tomorrow, I will be the only one who remembers ‘Alonso’s Monza 2024.’ Our car damages the tires, we slide in the corners, we lack grip. We have virtually no strong points. Let’s see if there’s a response, some action, and if we don’t keep coming back to each race with such a car.”
Regarding the intensifying rumors about Newey, Alonso warned that there is no miracle cure in Formula 1.
“I think it’s not the job of one person to fix things,” he responded, when asked about the prospect of the 65-year-old Brit wearing green starting in 2025.
“It’s more about what we have now, what we are producing, understanding what’s moving in the right direction, what’s going in the wrong direction, and trying to better prepare for 2025.”
Is 2025 shaping up to be a year already to forget? Not for Alonso.
“I think we still have time to react. McLaren made progress in four months, from last to the first step of the podium. So, we have clear examples.”
“Mercedes also started in the same way as us. We were on par with Mercedes for the first four races, and they have already won three races this year. So, I’m not a fan of excuses.”
“I think as long as we haven’t improved the car, it’s not enough. Not good enough at Monza. Not good at Zandvoort, at Spa, in Hungary.”
“And there will be no major changes in Baku, in Singapore, or in Austin, unless we bring new parts.”
“That’s the plan. The team is aware of the situation. The team is working hard. So yes, we stay united. We keep pushing. The weekend before, we scored a point. At Monza, we were close to scoring two points, and that will be our battle.”
