Fernando Alonso’s F1 Future Uncertain as Contract Nears Expiry

08/04/2024

Fernando Alonso dismisses the notion of joining Mercedes F1 as a potential move, emphasizing the option doesn’t hold appeal for him amidst speculation about his future in the sport.

Alonso’s contract is set to expire at the end of this year, and his future remains uncertain despite rumors linking him to several top teams.

He has previously stated that he would wait until later in the season before deciding whether he wishes to continue racing in F1.

However, the two-time world champion has expressed dissatisfaction with Aston Martin’s current performance level, appearing disillusioned when discussing his future.

“I’m having a lot of fun, which is great for motivating me to keep racing. But I’ve had one of my best weekends, I think, behind the wheel, and I’m 44 seconds off the leader. It doesn’t seem so appealing in retrospect.”

Alonso suggests that if Aston Martin doesn’t start making quicker progress towards the front of the pack, he might simply decide to retire from F1 again.

“Of course, Fernando is the first to want to do better, we know that,” said team principal Mike Krack. “And I think we will do better. We have one of the best drivers in history.”

“To convince him, the race for development will kick into gear. It’s already happening with us.”

He could have the opportunity to join Mercedes next year as the team looks for a replacement for Lewis Hamilton.

However, Alonso pointed out: “Mercedes is behind us. So, that doesn’t look so appealing either.”

As for the Red Bull door, it seems closed as long as Max Verstappen is there, confirmed by Dr. Helmut Marko.

“I don’t know why but I don’t see the two of them together at Red Bull. But you should never say never.”
