Alonso Shines in Wet, Stroll Struggles: F1 Aston Martin Divide

19/04/2024

In contrasting fortunes at Aston Martin F1, Alonso excelled under wet conditions to place third, while Stroll lagged at fifteenth.

The track truth has spoken again at Aston Martin F1, and it’s unequivocal.

Fernando Alonso finished 3rd in the ‘Sprint Shootout’, demonstrating his mastery of the changing conditions in the last part of qualifying.

The Aston Martin F1 driver could make a strong move tomorrow in China, confirming his team’s return to form.

“It was quite a stressful session. In QS1, we were watching the radar to see if rain was coming. We progressed and reached eighth in QS3 before the rain intensified. As conditions changed, we were very competitive.”

“The tires seemed to improve each lap, but the track worsened as the rain intensified. It was difficult to assess the level of grip and the degree of risk to take. We have two races now, so let’s see if we can score points in the Sprint and qualify well for Sunday.”

Stroll misses another great opportunity

Lance Stroll could only manage 15th: another stark disappointment, contrasting with the praise from Fernando Alonso and his team.

How can one explain the gap of over 10 places on the grid between him and his teammate?

“We had solid runs in free practice, and I found good speed towards the end of the session on softs. However, I lacked the necessary grip in qualifying while the track was dry. We were then caught off guard by the rain, and I couldn’t do a second push lap in QS2.”

“Our options are limited in a short Sprint since we start 15th, but we will learn from this day and see what we can do for the rest of the weekend.”
