Aston Martin’s mixed fortunes in Miami: Stroll’s strong Sprint result contrasts with Alonso’s struggles in both qualifying and the race weekend.
It was a challenging day for Fernando Alonso in Miami. After retiring from the Sprint while still in points contention in wet conditions (before being hit by Liam Lawson), Alonso struggled in qualifying, finishing 17th for tomorrow’s race. His mood was far from cheerful by the end of the day.
“It’s been a tough day. In qualifying, we simply didn’t have the pace to make it to Q2, so scoring points tomorrow will be a real challenge. We need to better understand the issues and find more pace.”
“During the Sprint, I had a perfect race and felt competitive. We should’ve switched to slicks earlier, but we were still on track for points when Lawson made contact with me.”
“I want to thank the team for helping repair the car before qualifying. The mechanics did an amazing job, and I really appreciate their efforts.”
On the other hand, Lance Stroll had a much more positive experience. He finished in the points in the Sprint and even climbed to 5th place thanks to 5-second penalties. However, his 19th place in dry qualifying was a sharp contrast.
“We know we don’t have the pace right now, and qualifying went as we expected. We made some positive setup changes after the Sprint, and the car was at its best for the weekend, but we’re still not fast enough.”
“So, it was great to get a solid result in the Sprint earlier today. Right now, it’s the small victories that matter, and I felt everything went well with plenty of opportunities and good decisions. But we’re still not at the level we want, and we need to find more pace.”
