Fernando Alonso eagerly anticipates Adrian Newey’s arrival at Aston Martin, viewing the collaboration as a significant opportunity to enhance the team’s performance and his future success.
Fernando Alonso acknowledged that Adrian Newey’s arrival at Aston Martin F1 next year could bring about several changes. First and foremost, he admits he will only consider retirement after driving the 2026 car designed under the guidance of the renowned engineer.
“I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t thought about it. Adrian will join in March next year and will focus on 2026, so let’s see how I feel at the end of 2026 and whether I can continue. It will be a decision we’ll make together as a team, with Lawrence [Stroll], with Adrian,” Alonso stated.
“For me, it’s an incredible opportunity because driving one of Adrian’s F1 cars is something very special, but also because when you work with people of Adrian’s calibre, there’s so much to learn from them. It’s extremely rewarding.”
The two-time world champion revealed that he had hoped to see Newey sign with the Silverstone team from the moment his departure from Red Bull was confirmed. He even contacted Newey personally: “I was hoping Adrian would join us when he decided to leave his former team.”
“Initially, you dream that this might be a possibility. There were a few rumours about him joining different teams, and I asked Lawrence, Martin Whitmarsh, and several people in the team whether we had approached Adrian.”
“I ended up contacting him myself. I have his number and I sent him a message: ‘What a surprise! If you ever think you’d like a new challenge, I’d love to work with you one day.'”
“I later found out that Adrian and Lawrence were already in touch. Lawrence kept me informed about the negotiations. When Adrian decided to join us, I was thrilled but also proud that he wanted to work with us and believed in our project. It also shows what Lawrence is capable of—he’s the only one who can make certain things happen.”
“His passion for motorsport and his vision for Aston Martin Aramco are boundless. I’ve never seen anything like it—someone so determined, so passionate. He’s an inspiration to everyone on the team. It’s a privilege to work with him.”
Fan support helps “open your eyes”
In the same interview, Alonso also reflected on the role he plays for his fans, whom he inspires daily: “It’s special, but you often don’t realise what you represent to people until you have emotional encounters with fans or hear incredible stories of support.”
“It really opens your eyes. You see the respect they have for you, how much they know about you, and how you inspire them to be better or achieve something. You meet people who have gone through tough times in their lives, and they look to your career for inspiration.”
“They see that you’ve never given up, and they write to you, sharing their story. When you read that letter or hear their tale, that’s when you truly realise what you might mean to someone else.”
“It wakes you up, in a sense, because you’re so focused on the next race, the next meeting with your engineers, or the next performance tweak that will make the car a hundredth of a second quicker.”
“It’s an endless pursuit – adding performance to the car, becoming a better driver – and you’re so absorbed in these things that you don’t always step back and appreciate the wider impact you’ve had and how much you matter to people.”
“Victory is closer” with Newey
The Spaniard is still chasing his 33rd Formula 1 win, having not claimed victory in over a decade. He acknowledges that Newey’s arrival brings renewed hope, though he remains cautious: “A win is certainly closer with Adrian than without him, that’s for sure. His track record in Formula 1 is incredible.”
“I’m aware of my situation and I hope I’ll be here to drive that fast car Adrian produces, but if it doesn’t come in time for me to get behind the wheel, I’ll still enjoy it because I’ll always be part of the team and this exciting journey with Aston Martin.”
Alonso believes his 33rd victory could send a powerful message to the younger generation: “I’ve thought about it, and it would mean a great deal. Winning another Formula 1 race after all these years would be a real statement: never give up, always fight for your dreams, follow your passion, do what you love. It would be significant not just for me, but for the sport itself.”
“And it could mean a lot to many young drivers: if they’re going through a period without success, that’s okay—what matters is doing what you love. If you keep trying to give your best, improve, work hard, and find yourself in the right place at the right time, success can come.”
“We’re doing everything we can within the team to make this a reality. It will be very special if we succeed. It’ll be special for me, special for Aston Martin, and special to reward everyone who has supported me throughout my career. Let’s see.”
