Fernando Alonso claimed Ferrari had the speed to triumph at the Singapore Grand Prix, hindered only by their grid positions.
Fernando Alonso stated that Ferrari had the fastest car and the pace to win the Singapore Grand Prix if both drivers had started higher on the grid.
After winning in Monza and securing pole position in Baku, Ferrari was expected to continue its recent good form and emerge as the main rival to McLaren.
Carlos Sainz crashed in the final corner during Q3 as he was preparing for his timed lap, while Charles Leclerc missed his laps.
Leclerc managed an impressive race to gain five places and finish fifth, with Sainz recovering from a poor start with an earlier pit stop to finish seventh.
Alonso, who lost a position to Sainz in the pits and another to Leclerc on track, stated that his Aston Martin was no match for a Ferrari that had the potential to win the race.
“The Ferraris should have won this race,” said Alonso, who finished eighth.
“It was probably the fastest F1 this weekend, so it wasn’t my race against Charles and Carlos.”
Alonso also commented on his own performance: “We are eighth, just two seconds behind a Ferrari. I don’t know if I can do better!”
With Ferrari not at the front, Lando Norris went unchallenged to an emphatic 20-second victory over Max Verstappen.
Frédéric Vasseur, Ferrari’s team principal, concurred with Alonso and highlighted that Leclerc’s drive in the second stint matched Norris’s performance.
“We posted the same times as Lando in the last 25 laps. Maybe he was doing some push-cool-push to recharge the battery and try for the fastest lap, I didn’t follow it. But at least we were on pace, and that’s encouraging.”
“Our goal wasn’t to match Lando, but to come back, score points, and I think we recovered well from qualifying.”
“If we missed something this weekend, it wasn’t Friday, it wasn’t Sunday, it was in between. It’s clear that up to Q2, we were on Lando’s pace and we didn’t get a lap in Q3 with both cars.”
“That means starting from ninth and tenth place, and in Singapore, that’s almost the end. But it was probably the best we could do in the race; maybe we could have caught George [Russell].”
“But that was the maximum. Clearly, Q3 cost us dearly.”
