Alonso Revives Aston Martin’s Hopes with Sixth in Canada

09/06/2024

Aston Martin F1 reclaims form in Canada as Alonso clinches sixth, showing resilience and tactical acumen under unpredictable conditions.

Aston Martin F1 has regained its stride in Canada, with Fernando Alonso securing sixth place in qualifying. The Spaniard expressed satisfaction with his performance after disappointing outcomes in Imola and Monaco, suggesting he might have achieved even more.

“The qualifying session was quite unpredictable due to the looming threat of rain, but I believe we should be content with both cars reaching Q3 under these conditions,” remarked the two-time world champion.

“Having been eliminated in Q1 during the last two weekends, starting from sixth position gives us a solid chance to score points tomorrow. I don’t think I delivered a perfect lap in Q3, and it stings a bit to see that I was only two-tenths off pole position at the end.”

“Overall, the car felt somewhat improved this weekend, and tomorrow we will see how we handle the tyres and pace as we haven’t had many long runs on dry tracks. If it rains, the race might hinge on slight margins and timely tyre changes, so we must be prepared for anything.”

Lance Stroll, starting ninth, believes he could have advanced further: “Qualifying for Q3 is positive, yet I feel more was possible today. I clipped the wall during Q1, which may have caused some damage as the car’s handling seemed off afterwards.”

“Nonetheless, we are well-placed to earn points in front of my home crowd tomorrow. The unpredictable Montreal weather could spring surprises, so we’ll do our homework tonight and ensure we are ready to capitalise on any opportunities during the race.”
