Alex Palou’s stunning Indy 500 triumph earns praise from F1 stars Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz, reigniting Formula 1 speculation.
Palou has for some time been seen as a potential third Spaniard in Formula 1, particularly because he is currently the most impressive driver in IndyCar. Already a three-time champion and leading the current season, Palou also won the Indy 500 last week, which caught the attention of his compatriot, Carlos Sainz.
Palou Deserves F1 Shot
“I think someone who is capable of winning in Indy, of winning the Indy 500, should at least get the chance to show what they can do in Formula 1 at some point,” said Sainz. “And if he is fast enough in Formula 1, then he should be welcomed.”
“I believe he had the opportunity to test the McLaren car several times. I’ve always had a very high opinion of Alex because I was his teammate in junior karting and he was very quick! But honestly, what he’s doing in America is truly admirable.”
“I think to dominate the way he does, you have to be very good. Formula 1 is a completely different discipline, a different world, but I have nothing but respect and admiration for what Alex is doing in Indy.”
Palou Delivers in Indy
Fernando Alonso is also impressed by Palou: “It’s tremendous for Spain, first of all, and for him. Competing in the Indy 500 after winning the IndyCar series for several consecutive seasons, and leading the championship as well.”
“He’s doing really well over there. I know most drivers would dream of a seat in Formula 1 and a career here, but he had an opportunity in IndyCar and he maximized every day.”
“He is a legend in IndyCar and always will be, so I don’t think Formula 1 frustrates him, and I’m very happy for him because he’s a very, very talented driver. We follow him here with great respect – and as fans, because I was watching the race on Sunday and hoping he would finally make it, and he did, so I’m happy for him.”
Palou Still F1 Ready
Palou has said he has given up hope of Formula 1, but Alonso believes he would easily be up to the level: “I think it’s more about having the right package, the right car, not making mistakes, having a good organization with experience.”
“The driver side is a bit easier. I think all IndyCar drivers know how to drive fast cars, and here, 90% of your success is dictated by the car you drive. So it’s more a matter of team preparation.”
“We’ll see, but we hope it will be a good opportunity for Cadillac with the regulation changes. Everyone starts from scratch and it’s a good time to enter the sport.”
