Albon's Long-Term Vision for Williams Success

Albon Eyes Williams F1 Glory with Patience

02/06/2024

Alex Albon is determined to achieve his career goals with Williams F1, confident that his patience and dedication will eventually lead to success under the guidance of team principal James Vowles.

Albon is convinced that his dedication to Williams F1 will one day be rewarded. The Thai driver remains patient, recalling that his team principal, James Vowles, has emphasized the need for time to turn the team around.

“I think James summed up the situation well: if you are trying to implement long-term, fundamental changes within a team, it will take time and you cannot expect short-term solutions simultaneously,” Albon told Total Motorsport.

“I think when James arrived, there were more short-term aspects, but now, realistically, this will be a longer-term endeavour, which is also reflected in my contract.”

“I know this year will not be easy for us, I know next year will be a step forward, but it won’t be a miracle solution, and when the regulations change, that’s really when we’ll reap the rewards of our hard work.”

The goals the driver has set himself are all achievable within his team: “Let’s be realistic, our next big target is to score points regularly, and I think we can start achieving that next year.”

“Then, my next major goal would be to get on the podium, and then to win a race. There were several options on the table for where I wanted to be. Ultimately, it felt like the Williams path was not only the one I knew – I’ve been here for a few years now – but also the one I believed in.”

Besides the need to make a swift decision, Albon assures he was reassured by his boss’s words, which convinced him to stay with his current team.

“The driver market evolves every week, it was evolving every week when I signed my contract with Williams. As the year progressed, it was just one of those tricky situations, but the more I believed in the team, the project, and the journey, and with James constantly reminding me of where we were, it led to this natural decision.”

He also believes that driving for a team using a Mercedes engine is a smart move: “I think Mercedes has always been ahead of its rivals when it comes to adapting to regulatory changes, which isn’t to say that other teams won’t do a good job.”

“But I think it’s at least a safe bet. Hopefully, even in 2026, if we are still in our building phase, we will have a very strong power unit to support us.”
