Williams F1 meticulously adjusted Alex Albon’s car, ensuring it met Zandvoort race regulations.
At Zandvoort, Alex Albon was disqualified after his impressive eighth place in qualifying because the floor of his Williams FW46 was too wide. Team principal James Vowles revealed that it was fairly simple to fix, but the causes of this non-compliance are still under investigation.
Vowles confirmed that by working on the area of the floor that was too wide at the back with “400-grit sandpaper for a minute,” the job was done, allowing Albon to participate in the race. “An investigation is still ongoing. This shows how complex the issue is.”
Vowles explained that Williams F1 has two methods to check the cars before sending them onto the track, and the second one tested may have caused an additional error.
“The first is basically a template, that is, it reproduces the legal width of the floor, and it fits within this frame, so in other words, the template is legal. The second check was performed on the car at the factory, on Tuesday, and both checks showed that the car was indeed legal.”
“There was another check on Thursday, which showed that the car was slightly over, and by slightly over, I mean decimals of a millimeter basically. However, we did two things. We always adjust the floor to make sure it’s aerodynamically in the right zone.”
“I personally believe that one of these adjustments put the floor in a zone where it was slightly more illegal than that, and it pushed us beyond the limit. In this kind of situation, we always try to bring things back to zero, and we do not want to be under two millimeters.”
“It’s not important everywhere on the floor, but there are a few areas where it is significant. It turns out that the place where we were illegal is not at all important from an aerodynamic point of view. We could very well have been below.”
The Briton concluded that his team “had not done a good enough job scanning and ensuring to copy the procedures that the FIA does. Because when we’re talking about tenths of a millimeters, it doesn’t change enough to make you lose positions.”
