Albon’s Advice Lawson Should Await Red Bull Prime Seat

Lawson Warned: Patience Key Before Red Bull Showdown

Albon urges Lawson to build F1 experience before challenging Verstappen, citing the value of patience over haste for Red Bull ambitions.

Alex Albon has advised Liam Lawson to consider accruing further Formula 1 experience within the Red Bull junior team before confronting the formidable challenge of racing alongside Max Verstappen at the main Red Bull outfit.

Lawson’s outstanding performances since his return have propelled him into discussions for a potential promotion to replace the embattled Sergio Perez. Securing a Red Bull seat would mirror Albon’s own trajectory, who, with just 12 Grands Prix under his belt, found himself fast-tracked to the team’s top echelon.

While Albon managed to retain his position into 2020, a turbulent season with the temperamental RB16 saw him ultimately lose the seat to Perez.

“Liam is in a win-win situation,” noted the Williams driver.

“At worst, he’ll be in a Red Bull junior team for 2025, so in my mind, is there really a need to rush into the main team to compete against Max?”

“From my own experience, spending a couple of years honing one’s craft isn’t necessarily a bad thing,” he continued. “Of course, if an opportunity arises, one must seize it, but patience has its virtues.”

Perez, however, was notably candid about Lawson following their clash in Mexico, remarking that his prospective successor lacked the “right attitude” for Formula 1.

Albon observed that Lawson’s assertive moves underscore the heightened pressure he faces to make a case for himself at Red Bull.

“There’s evidently some tension among the RB junior drivers vying for that coveted seat,” Albon reflected. “You can see it on the track, in the moves they make. Yuki and Liam are two fiercely ambitious drivers aiming for the top, so it’s understandable.”

Lawson even brandished a middle finger as he passed Perez’s Red Bull during the race.

“I don’t think that’s pressure talking; it’s frustration with his fellow driver,” Albon mused. “Personally, I wouldn’t have done it—not in Mexico, during Checo’s home race! He was tempting fate there (laughs). But that’s racing drivers for you. We’re all ravenous.”
