Williams F1 could spring a surprise in Montreal as the Canadian Grand Prix contends with unpredictable weather. Alex Albon expressed astonishment at his pace on the first day and sees it as a potential advantage for the weekend.
“Overall, we had a solid practice session in EL2 and it was exhilarating to take some risks,” said the Thai driver. “It looks like we’ll have similar conditions throughout the weekend, so I’m pleased we managed to get some laps in with both the slicks and inters.”
“The car felt good on both compounds, and the slicks were particularly effective even with the DRS closed, so there’s definitely more time to be gained. Across my stints, I was between fourth and ninth place, so I’m quite positive.”
Logan Sargeant, like many other drivers, lamented the compromised conditions: “Clearly, the day was highly disrupted. Overall, we couldn’t get a proper run on either dry or wet surfaces.”
“We might have missed a small opportunity by not doing laps when it was slightly wetter in EL1. Nonetheless, things went fairly smoothly overall, with a few details to fine-tune. I think we’ll have similar weather on Saturday, so it will be about being on the right tyre at the right time and having a correct strategy.”
When asked at a press conference about his team’s prospects, team boss James Vowles was optimistic: “I think Haas is actually quite strong in these conditions, so it will be a tight battle with them. But we’ve performed well, not only last year but in recent years.”
“There are characteristics that suit us well. Moreover, I think you’ve seen the weather conditions. This is what’s going to happen over the next few days. There will be intermittent rain in drying conditions. That creates an opportunity that I relish and look forward to.”
