Albon Ready for Wins Eyes F1 Championship Glory

Albon Ready for Wins, Eyes F1 Championship Glory

02/02/2024

Alex Albon expresses readiness to compete at the highest levels in Formula 1, targeting race wins and championships. His ambitions align with potential opportunities, including a pivotal role at Mercedes F1.

Albon believes he has reached the peak of his capabilities in F1 and feels “ready” to advance to the next level by competing for race wins and championships – whether with an improving Williams team or elsewhere.

The Thai driver’s statements, made before the announcement of Lewis Hamilton’s upcoming transfer to Ferrari in 2025, are timely as he is among those on the shortlist of potential favorites to replace the Brit at Mercedes F1.

Speaking on the High Performance podcast, he states “to have that inner confidence in myself.”

“It took a long time to get there, I don’t think I’m one of those drivers who had it from the start, but I do now.”

Albon Balances Loyalty and Ambition

“I’ve often thought… I feel, in a way, that I owe the Williams team for what they’ve given me, a chance to come back to F1, but at the same time, I know that I have given back to them as much as they’ve given me – it sounds a bit arrogant to say.”

“I want to make this team work, I truly believe we can make it, I love working in this team, I cherish the family feeling this team has, and I like seeing what James Vowles can do and how he unites this team.”

That said, Albon is all too aware of how brutal F1 can be when it comes to driver changes and admits he is keeping his options open for opportunities elsewhere, should Williams’ recent surge in performance stall.

“Strangely, I’m getting older. In the F1 world, I’m 27 and I feel like I’m close to my peak. You can be at your peak for a long time, but I’m at a point where I feel my experience and speed are in the right place.”

“I’m ready. I’m ready to win races, to fight for a championship. I’d love to do it with this team, but who knows? I have to keep my doors open because that’s how it is. Just as teams keep their doors open to other drivers, you have to keep your doors open to other teams.”
