Williams enters Melbourne with momentum, but Albon expects a tight battle with Alpine as both teams chase the title of “best of the rest.”
Williams heads to Melbourne on a high, having topped the timesheets in pre-season testing at Sakhir. But don’t expect them to challenge the front-runners just yet.
Alexander Albon is keeping expectations in check, but he sees a fierce midfield battle shaping up—one that could pit Williams directly against Alpine for the title of “best of the rest” behind the top four teams.
“We had a solid test, no doubt,” Albon said at Albert Park. “But testing is just that—testing.”
He remains realistic about where Williams stands: “We were probably a bit quicker than some teams due to fuel loads and engine modes. But the real fight for us is in the midfield.”
The new FW47 is showing promise. “In terms of weight, parts, and overall balance, it’s looking strong. The team has done an amazing job over the winter.”
That said, Albon knows Williams won’t be taking on the big four. “We’re not in that fight. Alpine looks very strong—maybe even a touch ahead of us.”
With margins razor-thin, he expects the battle to shift from race to race. “Some tracks will suit us, others will suit them. Racing Bulls looked good at times, and Haas? You never know where they’ll land.”
One thing is certain—the midfield fight is closer than ever. “We’re talking about a tenth and a half between all of us. It’s tight.”
The battle for P5 is on.
