Alex Albon Out of Australian FP2 Following Crash

Following a crash in FP1, Williams F1 confirms Alex Albon will miss the FP2 session in Melbourne, assessing the damage.

Williams F1 has confirmed that Alex Albon will not take part in the FP2 sessions in Melbourne following the FP1 incident.

The Thai driver was involved in a crash during Friday’s opening free practice session of the Australian Grand Prix.

The session was subsequently halted with a red flag following Alex Albon’s off-track excursion in the lengthy high-speed sector by the lake. The car sustained significant wheel damage after hitting the wall twice, first on the right and then on the left.

An accident at the same spot as last year’s race for the Thai driver, which could have been much worse, given the severity of the impacts with the wall and the substantial loss of control before the first contact with the wall.

Williams will not be able to repair Albon’s car in time.

“Following Alex’s accident in FP1, we can confirm he will not participate in FP2 as we continue to assess the damage. Alex was not injured in the accident.”

Update: Williams does not have a third chassis. If Albon’s cannot be repaired, Williams may opt to sideline Logan Sargeant for the remainder of the weekend, leaving only one car available, which would then be assigned to the Thai driver.
