Albon Clears Colapinto of Reckless Start Charge

Colapinto Confused by Albon’s Critique at GP

24/09/2024

Albon defends Colapinto’s aggressive but fair start at the Singapore GP amidst radio frustration and public criticism.

Franco Colapinto did not understand the criticisms from his teammate Alex Albon after the start of the Singapore Grand Prix, where the Thai driver accused the other Williams F1 driver of attacking too much at the first corner and diving dangerously.

“I don’t understand,” declared Colapinto. “I only saw Tsunoda next to me. There was space, so I decided to take the inside line. There was also space to my left.”

“It was a good start. I did my best. I saw a gap and I went for it. It worked. The start is very important, it’s always nice to come out of turn 3 with some cars behind you, and I moved into the points because of that start.”

Albon himself backtracked on his initial statements, insisting that he had no complaints against other drivers, starting with his own teammate who took the corner correctly.

“I don’t know what it looked like from the outside, but I think it was more because nobody could turn into the corner. There was an accordion effect and everyone had to go straight in the first corner. I was on the outside and I paid the price by having to take the escape route,” he recounted.

“There’s nothing to criticize. It’s just a bit unfortunate that it was me who ended up on the other side of the corner. It was a bit frustrating. But I think the whole weekend was a bit frustrating. We had a car that should have been in the top ten and we didn’t make it.”

Colapinto was mainly frustrated by his strategy: “I just think we need to defend our position better and not let these mistakes happen again. Because just by stopping one lap too late, we lost the place in the points. But that’s how it is. We win and lose together.”
