Kyalami and Rwanda’s bids to host an African Grand Prix intensify, each pushing for a place on the F1 calendar.
Africa appears to be nearing a spot on the Formula 1 calendar.
It remains the only continent not represented in the championship, with two clear contenders for an agreement with Liberty Media.
These are the Kyalami circuit, which hosted the last South African GP in 1993, and Rwanda. Rwanda’s separate project seems to have strong backing from F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali and the FIA, which is holding the end-of-season gala in this Central African country.
“Potentially, Rwanda is in the cards, which is incredible,” said Lewis Hamilton in Brazil. “I just hope it happens before I leave.”
“It’s my biggest dream—to make sure I can race there before I retire.”
However, organizers of a potential F1 return to Kyalami revealed on Thursday that South African Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie met with Domenicali last month. The minister even mentioned having a “very good meeting” with FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem during the Azerbaijan GP.
Kyalami officials also stated that the circuit is working hard to restore full FIA Grade 1 accreditation and readiness for F1 at the track near Johannesburg.
“While negotiations with various parties, including Liberty Media, continue tirelessly behind the scenes, South Africans can rest assured that there will be an appropriate venue for the return of Formula 1.”
Additionally, a Kyalami spokesperson said, “The track could be ready for Formula 1 by 2027 or possibly even by late 2026.”
