Monza struggles with GP upgrades as the ACI President expresses concern over looming deadlines.
Monza is embroiled in a race against time to prepare for a crucial FIA inspection. As part of its bid to secure a new Formula 1 contract, the circuit has committed to an ambitious renovation plan, a portion of which must be completed by the Italian GP at the end of August.
However, delays have resulted in a significant amount of work still needing to be accomplished over the next six weeks, with a critical deadline looming.
The track surface has yet to be completely relaid, the pit buildings are still to be finished, and two tunnels passing under the main straight also need to be completed.
“We had set a deadline of July 1st, and the visit from the FIA delegation went very well,” stated Angelo Sticchi Damiani, head of the Automobile Club of Italy. “The work was very much appreciated, and there were a few minor suggestions about details. The next step will be the inspection on August 1st.”
The 2025 edition is the last race scheduled in Monza’s current contract with F1: “We have a very narrow window to renew our contract with F1. For the agreement to be concluded, we need to be certain that some of the work will be completed by 2025 and the rest by 2026.”
“We are a bit nervous about this. We still have a lot of work to do to secure this deal with the greatest possible security, both financially and in terms of approvals.”
One of the crucial elements of the deal will be meeting Liberty Media’s requirements for the expansion of the Paddock Club: “We need to allocate a space of about 5000 square meters, including the press room. This is an important aspect for F1, and we will undoubtedly be able to offer a very cost-effective space.”
