Oscar Piastri secured a solid fourth-place finish at the Australian Grand Prix, his home race, despite not making it to the podium.
Oscar Piastri finished fourth in the Australian Grand Prix, competing in front of his home crowd a few kilometers from where he grew up. The McLaren F1 driver admits he would have liked to have been on the podium at home but is pleased with his team’s strong performance.
“Absolutely, it’s a good result. Obviously, I would have preferred to be one place higher, but it’s a positive outcome. There are things I could have done better during the race; I struggled a bit with the second stint on hard tyres. But overall, I’m happy with my race and the valuable points I’ve secured for the team,” Piastri stated.
The Australian was surprised by McLaren’s pace in Melbourne, especially finishing ahead of Sergio Pérez: “We were much faster than we expected. We were able to keep up with the Ferraris, which was a pleasant surprise.”
“Max [Verstappen] obviously retired early, but we were surprised that Checo wasn’t faster. It’s a satisfactory result, we’re happy with it, and being able to stay close to Ferrari is a very positive sign, so I’m looking forward to what the future holds.”
