2025 F1 Cars to Evolve - Despite Looming 2026 Rule Changes

Aston Martin foresees major F1 design changes by 2025, despite 2026 rules

29/10/2024

Aston Martin anticipates notable F1 car transformations by 2025, even as 2026’s regulations draw closer, revealing untapped potential.

Aston Martin F1’s Performance Director, Tom McCullough, has emphasised that next year’s cars will feature distinct characteristics, even as they enter the final season of the current regulatory cycle.

New technical regulations are set to come into force in 2026, introducing substantial aerodynamic and engine revisions.

The present set of rules will enter its concluding season next year, with teams now compelled to divide resources to focus on both current and future projects.

“We’re in the phase of transferring to wind tunnel and CFD work,” McCullough explains.

“At this stage of the year, you tackle the major architectural aspects that could differ for next year’s car.”

“This is where the focus lies in wind tunnel development. But you’re also making many decisions around the car’s overall design, vehicle dynamics, and suspension.”

“There’s still potential to be harnessed within this regulatory cycle.”

Though teams are looking to gain an edge ahead of the new regulations, McCullough believes there will be considerable differences between the 2025 and current F1 cars.

“There’s still a great deal to accomplish with next year’s cars. We need to understand this year’s limitations and address as many as possible, whether mechanical, aerodynamic, or otherwise.”

“This is the critical phase. The cars will still look markedly different next year.”

“Yes, they’ll be evolutions of the current F1 cars, but everyone is aiming for significant advancements.”
