2024 F1 Season Review - Logan Sargeant

Logan Sargeant: The Full Story of His 2024 F1 Season

17/12/2024

Logan Sargeant’s challenging 2024 F1 season ended abruptly as Williams opted for a mid-season driver change following lackluster results.

In 2023, Logan Sargeant became the first American driver to secure a full-time seat in Formula 1 since the 2007 season… but after a challenging rookie year, the adventure ultimately came to an early end for the Williams F1 driver.

James Vowles, the team principal, and Dorilton, the owner, gave Sargeant considerable time in 2024 before deciding to replace him with Franco Colapinto.

Of the 22 Grands Prix contested in 2023, Sargeant managed to compete in 14 more this season before being dropped after the Dutch Grand Prix. Let’s take a closer look at his season.

At the first race of the season on the Bahrain International Circuit, he qualified 18th, moved up to 14th by the second lap, but finished 20th due to a steering wheel issue. He then gained five places at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, starting 19th and finishing 14th. He withdrew from the Australian Grand Prix to allow his teammate Albon to use his chassis; Albon had crashed heavily during practice, and the team couldn’t repair his car. Sargeant described the situation as the “toughest moment” of his career.

Sargeant returned for the Japanese Grand Prix but crashed during practice. In the race, he climbed to 11th place but finished 17th after running into the gravel. He described the Chinese Grand Prix as a “massive struggle” after starting from the pit lane and finishing 17th with a penalty for a safety car infringement. He gained eight places to finish 10th in the Miami Grand Prix sprint but was forced to retire from the main race after a collision with Kevin Magnussen.

Sargeant made his first Q2 appearance of 2024 at the Canadian Grand Prix, qualifying 13th but retiring from the race after a spin. After finishing last among the classified drivers at the Spanish and Austrian Grands Prix, a stronger performance at the British Grand Prix saw him qualify 12th and finish 11th, his best qualifying and race results of the season.

The day after the Belgian Grand Prix, Williams announced that Sargeant would be replaced by Carlos Sainz for the 2025 season. Amid mounting speculation about Sargeant’s position at Williams, James Vowles kept him in the seat following the summer break for the Dutch Grand Prix, where Sargeant suffered a heavy crash during practice, forcing him to miss qualifying as the car could not be repaired in time. He finished the race in 16th place.

Two days after the race, Sargeant was released from the team with immediate effect and replaced by Formula 2 driver Franco Colapinto for the remainder of the 2024 season.

In qualifying, as in 2023, he was soundly beaten by Alex Albon, 13-0. In races, Albon finished ahead of his teammate 12 times. The statistics are damning.
