2024 F1 Season Review - Esteban Ocon

Esteban Ocon : The Full Story of His 2024 F1 Season

22/12/2024

Esteban Ocon’s 2024 F1 season was marked by resilience, a stunning podium in Brazil, and an abrupt departure from Alpine.

Esteban Ocon’s 2024 season proved to be his most difficult during his collaboration with Alpine F1, which ended after the Qatar Grand Prix with a rather unceremonious dismissal by the team.

From the winter tests, the Frenchman realized it would be a tough year, as the A524 was the weakest car on the grid. Starting from the back row in the first two races, he failed to score points but showed solid race pace considering the tools at his disposal.

It wasn’t until the Miami Grand Prix that Ocon secured his first point of the season, finishing tenth despite the underperforming A524, as the updates introduced in Japan had failed to deliver results.

Following Florida, a key low point for Ocon came at the Monaco Grand Prix, where he collided with his teammate early in the race after an aggressive move. This incident drew criticism from Bruno Famin, then team principal.

In Canada and Spain, Ocon managed to secure further points, finishing tenth on both occasions. He also scored two points in Belgium with an impressive ninth-place finish at Spa-Francorchamps.

In the second half of the season, following the announcement of his departure from the team, Ocon was denied access to the same upgrades as Pierre Gasly and faced challenging races, while his teammate gained momentum.

The highlight of Ocon’s season came with a brilliant second-place finish in Brazil after a tough race. He notably overtook Max Verstappen and pulled away in the rain before the race was halted. This strong result, coupled with Gasly’s third-place finish, gave the pair a memorable moment as teammates.

Seventeenth in Las Vegas, Ocon was involved in a first-corner incident in Losail that forced him to retire. Just two hours earlier, he had been informed of his immediate departure from Alpine, preventing him from competing in his final race in pink to make way for Jack Doohan at the Abu Dhabi GP.

Ocon ultimately conceded to this ungracious demand from the team to secure permission to drive for his new team, Haas F1, in post-season testing. For the first time, the Frenchman will take on a clear leadership role next year alongside Oliver Bearman, marking the start of his third challenge in Formula 1.
