Dive into the schedule and get a glimpse of what to expect as Max Verstappen defends his record at the 2024 Dutch Grand Prix.
Explore the key timings and whether Max Verstappen can defend his unbeaten streak at the Dutch GP 2024.
The Dutch Grand Prix signals the commencement of the second half of the 2024 F1 season following a four-week hiatus. Another similar break is scheduled for the autumn, though it will not include a factory shutdown, unlike this summer’s interlude.
Post-break, the teams are poised to reignite their campaigns with a successful weekend, aiming to immediately set a positive tone for the remainder of the season.
Track Characteristics
This marks the fourth Formula 1 race at the current Zandvoort circuit layout. Following years on an older, longer, and faster track, the circuit was reconfigured to its present form in 1999 and subsequently renovated by Dromo to accommodate F1 races from 2021.
Formula 1 had not visited the track since 1985, during which time it featured two significantly altered turns. Turns 3 and 14, named Hugenholtz and Arie Luyendyk respectively, have been modified to include banking. For the latter, the aim is to extend the full-throttle zone that constitutes the start-finish straight.
One of the key challenges is tyre management, as the tyres are severely tested. This is due, in part, to the remainder of the track consisting of intense curves, such as turn 7, which is taken at around 260 km/h and subjects the drivers to 5g forces. Turns 8 and 9 also comprise demanding high-speed bends.
The initial Tarzan corner is a relatively tight curve with multiple possible trajectories and gravel traps. Indeed, one of the distinct features of the Zandvoort circuit is its ample run-off areas where cars can end up in the event of a mishap.
The Contenders
Undefeated at Zandvoort since the Dutch Grand Prix’s return in 2021, Max Verstappen might face his first serious challenge at home this year as other teams appear better equipped to vie for victory.
On a circuit like Zandvoort, which is slow yet features some fast corners, McLaren F1 could emerge as the favourite, while Mercedes aims to consolidate its strong performance after securing three wins in the last four races.
Red Bull, particularly Verstappen, is expected to be in contention, whereas Ferrari may still lag behind these top three teams. Aston Martin and RB F1 are likely to lead the second tier of competitors.
The Dutch Grand Prix Timetable
Although it’s a European race with a conventional format, the Dutch Grand Prix has a slightly adjusted schedule with qualifying and the race starting an hour earlier on Saturday.
