The 2024 Brazilian GP promises thrilling action with a resurfaced track, rain forecasts, and tight competition for top championship standings.
The 21st race of the 2024 F1 season will take place this weekend in Brazil. After two victories by Ferrari, it will be intriguing to see if the battle for victory, and especially for both titles, heats up again.
The track surface will be an entirely new factor for drivers and teams this weekend. The new surfacing could lead to faster lap times and thus increase the pressure on the tires.
The resurfacing work was completed only recently, followed by a deep clean using a high-pressure water wash to remove the usual sheen of fresh asphalt, which has also heightened the surface’s abrasiveness.
Pirelli will mark the 30th anniversary of local hero Ayrton Senna’s passing with a pole trophy and podium caps bearing the colors of Brazil and the Senna logo.
Track Details
Known for its unpredictable weather (with a 60% chance of rain on Sunday), its tight and twisting infield, and its breathtaking title-race spectacles, Interlagos is a legendary F1 circuit.
Among the fifteen turns, the most famous are the first two, named in honor of the great Ayrton Senna. Competitors race counterclockwise, diving into the “Senna S,” which leads onto the Reta Oposta straight where DRS can be activated.
The second sector is fast-paced and technical, before the track climbs uphill past a fervent grandstand.
Turn 1 – A challenging banked corner at the end of a long straight. Its shape makes it tricky, with drivers braking sharply from 330 to just 110 km/h.
Turn 2 – A good exit from Turn 1 is essential to maintain momentum through Turn 2, the fast Turn 3, and into the first DRS activation zone.
Turn 4 – The first DRS activation zone offers an overtaking opportunity before a relatively fast corner.
Turns 5/6/7 – These high-speed curves, particularly Turns 6 and 7, present a real challenge for the tires on the left side. This leads into the slower Turn 8. From Turn 2 to the entry of Turn 6, drivers accelerate for seventeen seconds, only brushing the brakes at Turn 4.
The MGU-K recovers energy in braking zones, especially in this middle sector.
Turn 8 – The flat curbs at Turns 8 and 10 provide enough flexibility to find the best line through these slower corners.
Turn 12 – Critical for a fast lap as the exit speed determines the run up the hill and onto the main straight. The internal combustion engine will be pushed to its limits with a 40-meter elevation change between the exit of Turn 12 and the braking point for Turn 1.
Main Straight – The second DRS activation zone spans 500 meters, creating further overtaking opportunities.
Contenders
Ferrari may look for a triple win across the American races after its successes in the U.S. and Mexico. If achieved, the Scuderia will have scored nearly 20% of its season points in these three races, boosting its outlook for the Constructors’ Championship.
Behind them, McLaren aims to regain top form and contend for victory, while Max Verstappen will seek to extend his lead in the Drivers’ Championship. The big question for the front-runners will be Mercedes’ performance level.
Further back, the battle between Haas and RB F1 for sixth in the Constructors’ Championship will remain intense. Alpine and Williams will be keen to score points in their fight for eighth place.
