After a race marred by damage from a crash, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri faces performance challenges. The team anticipates improvements for the upcoming Miami Grand Prix.

Oscar Piastri hoped for a top-5 finish and to compete against the Ferraris, but the McLaren F1 driver did not benefit from his team’s strategy and mainly suffered significant damage on the restart, when Daniel Ricciardo was hit by Lance Stroll and damaged the diffuser of his own car.

“They were significant, I don’t know how much time they cost, but the back of the car was pretty much destroyed, so that explains the deficit. It was okay in the first part of the race, I was lacking a bit of pace but it was manageable. But by the end of the race, it was literally about limiting the damage,” Piastri stated.

McLaren will bring upgrades in two weeks for the Miami Grand Prix, and he hopes his MCL38 will gain more pace, even though he was surprised to see his teammate finish on the podium this Sunday.

“We hope it will make the car faster. We’ll see what we can do. It’s a very good result that Lando finished second today, it was unexpected. We need to understand why we were good, and we hope the car will be faster and that we can fight for podiums more regularly.”
