Alonso: ‘A crazy race’ that did not ‘help’ his strategy in China

Despite race neutralizations hindering his strategy, Fernando Alonso claims a top finish and the fastest lap.

Fernando Alonso finished seventh in the Chinese Grand Prix despite a strategy made less effective by race neutralizations. The Aston Martin F1 driver experienced an intense race marked by several incidents, but he is satisfied with his final result, especially with his fastest lap in the race.

“It was a crazy race, a lot happened for us. A very good start, I was second, then the safety cars which did not help our strategy and allowed others to save tires until the end,” Alonso said.

“We had to make another stop, and it was not ideal. I almost had an accident at the end but I set the fastest lap in the race and I finish in seventh position, so if you take all that into account, it’s a good weekend.”

Alonso opted for soft tires, a choice that seemed daring and was complicated by the many laps driven at a slow pace behind the safety car. He explains that when his stint on hard tires was interrupted, he had no choice.

“We only had one set of hard tires, and the safety car came out in the middle of our stint on hard tires. From there, our good start to the race was over, and we really had no other options. We will try to save more tires in the next Sprint weekend.”
