In Bahrain, Sergio Perez lauds Red Bull engineers for their daring RB20 design, challenging the F1 pecking order.
In the Sakhir paddock, Sergio Perez expressed his admiration for the Red Bull engineers, who have been bold in designing the RB20.
Without a doubt, Christian Horner and Helmut Marko aimed to lull the competition into complacency over the winter by describing the upcoming RB20 as an evolution of the RB19.
And the RB20 is already impressing its rivals in Bahrain.
When asked about the growing sentiment that Red Bull is starting the 2024 season even stronger than anticipated, Sergio Perez offered some perspective.
“I think things are a lot closer than we all might think, definitely.”
“I don’t believe we’ve really scrutinized our rivals in this aspect, but they don’t seem to be faring too poorly.”
“At the moment, we’re primarily focused on our own work; we’ve been quite busy with our program. This Friday, on the final day, we’ll get a clearer idea about the pecking order, but I think it’s not until next Sunday, after the Grand Prix, that we’ll truly understand the gaps in terms of a single lap and race performance.”
After clinching 21 out of 22 races in 2023, Red Bull wowed its competitors in 2024 with a seemingly radical change in the design of its RB20, which bears some resemblance to the now-abandoned concept by Mercedes for the W13 and W14 of the past two seasons.
When asked if he was shocked when he first saw the car, Perez responded: “Yes!”
“Obviously, we had a very dominant car last year. I think we all expected to continue with a similar concept, but Red Bull always surprises us, and the factory team really is bold. And they have clearly done an outstanding job.”
