Alex Albon expresses uncertainty over Williams F1’s ability to significantly advance in this year’s F1 standings, aiming to narrow the gap to the front.
Alex Albon is uncertain if Williams F1 will be able to make a significant leap forward in the standings this year. However, as he stated last year, his aim is to catch up to the leading pack and get closer to the top performers.
“As I would put it, looking at where we finished last year in seventh place, we were at the top of the lower midfield, essentially neck and neck with AlphaTauri, Haas, and Alfa Romeo,” Albon reminded selected media outlets.
“When you consider the gap between fifth and sixth, it’s still quite large. Considering what Alpine has achieved, there’s a substantial gap to the likes of Aston, McLaren, and Mercedes, and that’s practically leading pack territory. That’s where I want to be, right on their heels.”
“I believe setting such performance expectations for ourselves as a team is realistic, and we’ll see how it unfolds because, as mentioned, we finished seventh, but the gap to sixth was significant, and we still need to close in and attempt to overtake.”
Improvements on “weaker” circuits?
The Thai driver highlighted that his and his team’s goal is to win and consistently secure podium finishes. Nonetheless, he acknowledges the considerable effort required for Williams to reach this level.
“I’m aiming for podiums and victories. It’s realistic to think we won’t achieve that this year. Regular points finishes would be good. I’m also keen to see how we perform on circuits where we struggled last year.”
“Consider tracks like Monza, the United States, Canada, Silverstone – high-speed circuits where we knew we’d perform well, and I don’t see why this year would be any different.”
“However, with our car’s changed approach, we need to be consistent to be that kind of top five or six team, which wasn’t the case last year. I’m very interested to see how we fare on circuits where we’ve struggled, like Monaco, Barcelona, those kinds of tracks.”
