Sebastian Vettel Leaves Door Open to a Future F1 Role

Sebastian Vettel has left the door open to a potential return to Formula 1 in a different capacity, although the four-time world champion insists he is not actively pursuing a position within the sport.

The former Red Bull, Ferrari and Aston Martin driver, who retired from Formula 1 at the end of the 2022 season, continues to follow developments in the championship while enjoying a quieter life away from the demands of the racing calendar.

Now 39, Vettel has devoted more time to his family and personal interests, including maintaining a small farm at his home.

Speaking on the BBC’s Chequered Flag podcast, the German reflected on the freedom retirement has given him.

« Obviously, I enjoy the time I have. I think it’s a privilege to be in this position with my family, but I also have a small farm at home, so I look after that, » Vettel explained.

Despite stepping away from competitive racing, Vettel has maintained a strong interest in Formula 1 and its future, particularly the championship’s environmental commitments and evolving technical regulations.

His continued involvement in sustainability initiatives has also kept him connected to wider discussions about the direction of motorsport.

Vettel not actively seeking an F1 comeback

While Vettel remains interested in the possibility of taking on a new responsibility within Formula 1, he made clear that no formal discussions are currently taking place.

The former world champion stressed that his interest in the sport has never disappeared, even without an official role.

« I remain very involved in the sport. Obviously, I don’t have an active role at the moment, but I follow very closely what is happening and care about the future of the sport, » he said.

Vettel highlighted Formula 1’s ambition to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2030, alongside the regulatory changes shaping the championship’s next chapter, as subjects that continue to attract his attention.

He also acknowledged that opportunities could emerge in the future, without suggesting that a return was imminent.

« I’m always open to what might come up in terms of a potential role in the future, but I’m not actively looking for anything. »

That distinction is important. Vettel is not preparing a formal return to the paddock, nor is he approaching teams or senior figures in search of employment.

Instead, he is content to follow the championship from outside while remaining receptive to opportunities that might align with his interests.

« I’m not talking to teams or people and handing out my CV here and there, but I’m following everything from the outside with a lot of joy and pleasure, » he explained.

Vettel continues to watch Formula 1 races, including the recent Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku, and remains engaged with the competitive and technical developments taking place across the championship.

His comments suggest that any future involvement would depend on finding a suitable opportunity rather than a desire to return simply for the sake of being back in Formula 1.

Sustainability remains a central priority

Environmental responsibility has become an increasingly important part of Vettel’s public activities, particularly during the closing stages of his Formula 1 career.

While competing for Ferrari and later Aston Martin, the German increasingly used his platform to highlight environmental issues and encourage discussion about the sport’s long-term sustainability.

Those concerns have remained central to his thinking since retirement.

Vettel believes the challenges facing motorsport extend beyond racing itself, touching on broader questions about society, future generations and environmental responsibility.

« Obviously, the subjects I was thinking about during the final years of my active career are still very much on my mind, » he explained.

He identified sustainability and the future of the sport as particularly important, not only for himself and his children but for society more broadly.

Since leaving Formula 1, Vettel has continued supporting environmental projects and initiatives both within motorsport and beyond.

Some of those activities have taken place at racing circuits, while others have received less public attention.

The former champion is now considering how those projects might evolve and whether new opportunities could allow him to expand their impact.

« That’s where things come full circle with the projects I’ve done, some of which have been visible at circuits and others less so. I’m thinking a lot about the ideas I have for what might come next. »

A different future in Formula 1 remains possible

Vettel’s latest comments underline the distinction between returning to Formula 1 as a driver and potentially contributing to the championship in another capacity.

Although he has expressed no intention of actively seeking a position, his continued interest in environmental initiatives, technical developments and the sport’s long-term direction leaves open the possibility of future involvement.

For now, however, Vettel appears satisfied with the balance he has established between family life, personal projects and following the championship from a distance.

Whether that eventually leads to a formal role within Formula 1 remains uncertain.

What is clear is that retirement has not diminished Vettel’s interest in the sport that defined his racing career, or his desire to contribute to its future.
