Max Verstappen’s Vegas performance erased doubts as the Dutchman delivered a masterful drive, securing his dominance and proving Marko wrong.
Dr. Helmut Marko, Red Bull advisor, praised Max Verstappen after the Dutchman clinched his fourth Formula 1 world championship title at the Las Vegas Grand Prix.
Starting from fifth place, Verstappen showed strong pace early in the race, advancing to second before dropping back to fifth in the final stages.
Lando Norris couldn’t match the Red Bull driver’s pace in the opening laps, with Marko describing Verstappen’s and the team’s performance as a “tactical masterstroke.”
“At Monza, I was skeptical about the title. But fortunately, we managed to turn things around after Italy. Max has maximized his points since then, and during the race, it was a tactical masterstroke.”
“He demonstrated the speed possible in the early stages but then focused on the championship, bringing the car home in a commanding and stylish manner.”
What impressed Marko most about Verstappen’s title defense this season was his ability to remain competitive even when the RB20 wasn’t the fastest car.
“There were races where the car wasn’t the quickest, yet he still won.”
“And Monza was certainly the low point, but he still mastered it and extracted the maximum.”
“Not a single accident. And during the phase when we were sometimes only fourth in terms of speed, he still managed to maintain the gap at the front every time.”
The clear downside is the Constructors’ title, which has nearly slipped away.
“We need two drivers finishing in the points. Max has over 200 points more than Sergio.”
“For now, the priority was winning the championship for Max, but for our employees, it’s a disappointment because they won’t receive their bonuses, as these depend on our position in the Constructors’ standings.”
“We’ll make decisions after Abu Dhabi. There will be a meeting following the final race, and the outcome will be presented to the shareholders, who will then decide the driver lineup for both teams next year.”
Horner seems to be gradually withdrawing his support for Perez…
“Regarding the drivers… We have drivers under contract and drivers with options, which remain between the company and the drivers involved. There’s nothing to say about that today. But if there were, I would tell you.”
“I mean, obviously, just one point for Checo… It was a good race from him, a good recovery. But the problem is we’re starting from too far back with him, in a race where McLaren was weak. We would have liked to take more points from them today.”
