F1 Aligns Miami - Montreal for Sustainable Racing Future

Canadian GP Moves to May for Eco-Friendly Calendar

19/11/2024

The Canadian GP shifts to May from 2026, pairing with Miami to streamline logistics and cut F1’s environmental impact.

F1 has confirmed a change for Montreal, anticipated since the announcement of Monaco’s Grand Prix extension until 2031. Starting in 2026, the race in the Principality will move to mid-June.

The goal of this new agreement is to switch the Monaco round with the Canadian Grand Prix, with Formula 1 confirming that the latter will take place from 2026 during the third or fourth weekend of May.

This timing would directly coincide with the Indy 500’s qualifying or race, but F1’s focus lies elsewhere. Positioning Montreal in May enables a race double-header with Miami, held earlier that month, thereby reducing travel across the Americas.

“I am incredibly grateful to the promoter and all government partners involved in the Canadian Grand Prix, be it at the local, provincial, or national levels,” said Stefano Domenicali, F1 CEO.

“We commend the significant efforts by all parties to accelerate the temporary event setup to host the Formula 1 community earlier than in previous years.”

“This change will make the future flow of our calendar not only more sustainable but also more manageable logistically for our teams and staff.”

“Our ‘Net Zero’ commitment by 2030 remains a priority for us as a sport, and changes like this are crucial to staying on track to achieve that goal.”

Jean-Philippe Paradis, CEO of Octane Racing Group and promoter of the Canadian Grand Prix, welcomed the chance to help F1 advance its sustainability goals: “This calendar change is a major step in our commitment, as well as F1’s, towards a more sustainable future.”

“It demonstrates our desire to combine sporting performance and event organization with environmental responsibility. We are committed to offering our fans, communities, and loyal audiences a unique and rewarding experience while extending the summer season in Montreal.”

“This date change fully aligns with the dynamic strategic vision set by our team, in collaboration with stakeholders, to deliver an exceptional Canadian Grand Prix experience in a more sustainable and inclusive environment.”
