Carlos Sainz admits it will be painful to watch Ferrari contend for the 2025 drivers’ title after his departure from the team.
Sainz admitted he would inevitably be disappointed if Ferrari won a drivers’ title right after his departure.
Lewis Hamilton’s arrival at Ferrari in 2025 means Sainz was forced to leave, and he has since signed with Williams F1.
This also means Hamilton could secure a record-breaking eighth F1 championship with Ferrari, ending the team’s drivers’ title drought that dates back to Kimi Raikkonen in 2007.
Sainz, who alongside Charles Leclerc laid the groundwork for Ferrari’s return to Grand Prix victories, doesn’t want to miss the chance to at least win the constructors’ title this year.
“I’m a driver who likes to get involved in development, living in Maranello to improve the team. When I joined Ferrari in 2021, my goal was to win a championship. We could do that this year in the constructors’ standings.”
“It would be even more painful if, next year, they fought for the drivers’ title. I’ll feel like I had some influence in building this team to make it capable of fighting for the championship, and not being there next year, it hurts. So I want this title this year. To feel a bit less disappointed in 2025.”
“But you have to move on. I’m looking forward to being with Williams. It’s just the way things unfolded that leaves a bit of bitterness.”
Kimi Raikkonen, the Scuderia’s last champion, returned to Ferrari. Sainz wouldn’t rule out doing the same.
“I firmly believe you can never say never. With everything I’ve been through, I try to leave on good terms.”
“I try to put myself in good positions. I’m someone who has good relationships with people, so I’m relaxed in that regard. I’ll leave that door open.”
“For the next few years, Ferrari isn’t an option for me, as I’m committed to Williams. But in four, six, eight, ten years?”
