Christian Horner revisits Daniel Ricciardo’s iconic victories, showcasing the Australian driver’s peak performances and remarkable overtaking skills.
Christian Horner was asked about the most memorable race of Daniel Ricciardo’s career during the Australian driver’s time at Red Bull. The Milton Keynes team principal pointed to two standout examples of Ricciardo’s talent, starting with his triumph in Monaco in 2018, two years after a disappointing defeat in the Principality.
“He delivered brilliant races for us. I won’t name just one, but two,” said Horner. “Monaco, when the good old Renault engine lost its MGU-K, costing him around 30% of his power, leaving him with only the combustion engine to fend off Sebastian Vettel.”
“After losing the race a few years earlier—when we messed up by not having the right tires ready in the pit lane—it was an incredible moment, and it felt like the universe was correcting itself by giving him that victory.”
For his second example, Horner referred to the driver’s second career win: “As for other races, if you look at Hungary 2014…” began Horner, impressed by Ricciardo’s overtaking skills.
“Our biggest concern when he came to drive for us was that while we knew he was quick, we’d never really seen him overtake anyone, so we didn’t know how good he’d be in wheel-to-wheel combat. As soon as he got in our car, he never stopped overtaking people!”
“He braked so late. If you look at the 2014 race in Hungary, his first win in Montreal, the race he won in China in 2018, I think. For me, in 2014, he was the best driver on the grid—that was his peak.”
