Albon: Williams F1 Made Too Many Changes to the FW46

17/11/2024

Alex Albon admits Williams F1’s aggressive FW46 development created unintended issues, despite ambitious efforts to address long-standing flaws.

Albon acknowledged that Williams F1 at times overdid some of the changes made to the FW46, as well as in its organization and development. The Thai driver admits the scope of work was monumental for the team.

“There are areas we really focused on and wanted to fix as a priority,” said Albon. “But there are other areas that weren’t problematic and have now become issues.”

“I’d say this year, the car has changed more than it has over the past six or seven years at Williams in terms of philosophy and driving feel.”

“There are areas where we’ve gone too far and need to take a step back, but that’s a good thing. I think we’re not quite there yet; it’ll take a bit more time to really define where we want the car to be.”

“The positive thing is that we’ve identified the issues. It’s not like we had an idea, failed, and are still scratching our heads. We know where we need to improve.”

Williams has always planned to sacrifice development for 2025 to focus entirely on 2026, but Albon explains that next year’s development remains unavoidable: “A lot of things are interconnected. If you think about what we’re learning about the car and its limitations, we still need to address those for 2026 or any other future season.”

“There are many aspects of conceptual design where we could allocate resources rather than on the current car, let’s say. But there are still key areas we need to address with this car to ensure they’re fixed for future years.”

“So, there’s a balance between what we’re learning now, which will help us in the future, and spending more time on aspects that will be critical for better results down the line.”
