Max Verstappen’s soaring popularity in Brazil sparks debate: is his relationship with Kelly Piquet the main factor?
Max Verstappen received a warm welcome and widespread acclaim in Brazil following his victory in the last Grand Prix.
The Red Bull driver delivered a masterclass in front of the local crowd, and it’s clear he’s gaining more and more fans in the country.
How does he explain it? Is it tied to his in-laws (he is the partner of Kelly Piquet, daughter of Nelson)? Are there other reasons?
“Yes, of course, my in-laws are Brazilian. I really enjoy meeting them every time I come to the country, as was the case for the Grand Prix,” the Dutchman explains.
“You know, it’s obviously quite a long journey from Europe, but we always try to combine it with the Grand Prix and stay a little longer. We arrive earlier and extend the trip. Also for Kelly, of course, to spend more time with her family.”
“And I’ve been very warmly welcomed by the Piquet family. There’s obviously a huge history tied to racing, so it’s really cool.”
“As for other reasons… Honestly, I also really enjoy being around the Brazilian mentality. I think it suits me quite well. My Portuguese is still very poor, so maybe when I stop racing, I’ll need to take a few lessons.”
“Finally, it’s always the case when I come to São Paulo—it’s a circuit where I want to perform well. Naturally, when you have a small connection with Brazil, it’s special. And when you can deliver a great race like this year, it’s even better.”
