Austin Debate Verstappen Criticizes F1's Tightened Limits

Verstappen Blasts F1’s Track Rules as “Over-Regulated”

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen slams F1’s strict regulations, questioning recent Austin controversies and calling for a streamlined approach to track limits.

Max Verstappen believes there are now too many rules in F1, and he worries about becoming overly reliant on them. The Red Bull driver, at the center of controversy after Austin and Lando Norris’s penalty, calls for a simplification of regulations.

“I feel like we’re at a point where I almost need a rulebook in the car,” Verstappen stated. “That’s the way things are going. If you look over the years, the rulebook has grown significantly with more and more regulations.”

“It’s definitely over-regulated, but I can also see the other perspective; if we remove rules and there’s an incident, it’s, ‘Oh, we need more rules.’”

“We need to stay firm on this point. It’s always the same argument because in the past, if you had fewer rules, you’d face the same claim that we need to be strong on this or that. It’s always the same story.”

The Dutchman refocuses the debate on Lando Norris’s track-limit infraction: “Ultimately, you can’t overtake outside the track on the outside. I’ve been penalized for it myself in the past, and I don’t understand why there’s a call to change the regulations when it’s always been this way.”

When reminded that he, too, went off-track during the maneuver, Verstappen insists he’s only following the rules: “It’s how the rules are written; it’s not up to me. I follow them, and sometimes they catch up with me. I didn’t write the rules, but I play by them.”

“It’s quite impressive that people can read my mind. It’s crazy. I mean, I’ve always tried to take the corners. I wasn’t looking for a shortcut. I don’t even know how to respond to that comment.”

The three-time world champion is glad to be back in the fight for victory after several challenging races: “Austin was a positive weekend for me. Sunday wasn’t as strong, and we’re analyzing the reasons for that.”

“But overall, I felt like I was back in the battle for the first time in three races, and I hope from now on I’ll at least be in the mix. This year is very different.”

“Many more cars are highly competitive in the race, so we don’t really know what to expect here. I like this place; I’ve always had good races, but it’s too soon to say if I can aim for victory here.”
