Mark Webber explores a bold transfer for Piastri, as Red Bull weighs options for future team dynamics.
As we reported just over a week ago, rumours have been circulating about potential links between Oscar Piastri and Red Bull for the future. It appears there is some truth to these whispers, as Red Bull advisor Dr Helmut Marko has confirmed that Mark Webber is pushing to open discussions regarding a possible transfer of Piastri to the Milton Keynes-based team. However, it remains unclear whether these talks concern the short or medium term.
Webber, who raced for Red Bull from 2007 to 2013, now manages his fellow Australian and played a key role in orchestrating Piastri’s departure from Alpine, where he was a junior driver, and securing his current position at McLaren.
So far, the move has proven to be an astute one. Despite not yet completing two full seasons in Formula 1, Piastri has won two Grands Prix and is on the verge of helping McLaren claim the Constructors’ Championship.
Marko has hinted that the young Australian might soon be considering another team switch, as Red Bull looks to address the disparity between its drivers, with Max Verstappen far outshining Sergio Perez.
While Liam Lawson seems like the obvious short-term solution, could a surprise involving Piastri unfold this winter? Or perhaps further down the line? After all, Piastri is currently locked into a strong, multi-year contract with McLaren.
Marko confirmed that Webber is keen to explore his protégé’s future, stating: “Let’s put it this way: Mark Webber is very eager to discuss.”
The lingering question is why Piastri, who enjoys equal status with Norris at McLaren, would consider moving to Red Bull Racing, where he would face the daunting task of competing with Verstappen. Unless, of course, Red Bull is already preparing for the possibility of its star driver departing for Mercedes or Aston Martin in 2026…
