Stella Unfazed as Ferrari Secures Dominant Austin One-Two Finish

23/10/2024

McLaren’s Andrea Stella expressed no surprise at Ferrari’s Austin dominance, noting their untapped potential in recent races.

McLaren F1 did not achieve the expected performance with the upgrades introduced in Austin, but Andrea Stella remains unconcerned for now. The Woking team principal noted that Ferrari’s one-two finish was no surprise, given the Scuderia’s form before the four-week break.

“I think when it comes to competitiveness, there are several factors to consider,” said Stella. “As for Ferrari, I had already mentioned over the weekend that they had been consistently quick in previous races. They just hadn’t been able to fully capitalise on their potential.”

“I believe that in Baku, Leclerc, to be honest, was certainly capable of winning the race. In Singapore, we anticipated that Leclerc would be highly competitive for pole position, and the same would have been true for the race. So we’re not surprised that Ferrari is so close.”

The circuit favoured Ferrari’s success, as well as Red Bull’s: “Then, when we look at the characteristics of this circuit, with very low-speed braking zones and some sections at very high speed, we know that in both these scenarios, our car doesn’t perform at its best.”

“For example, very low speeds and very high speeds are also where Red Bull excels. When you consider Ferrari, they were already competitive. Then, considering the track layout, and the fact that Red Bull had three weeks to study the data and reflect on what’s happening with their car.”

“And if we’re talking about Red Bull, a group of highly competent engineers, it’s no surprise that we struggled here in Austin. I think the next circuit [in Mexico] should be a bit more suited to our car’s characteristics. But overall, it’s not a surprise to me.”
