Vasseur Eyes Ferrari’s Title Hopes Through Pure Performance

23/10/2024

Fred Vasseur stresses Ferrari’s pursuit of pure performance, believing consistent improvement will decide their Constructors’ title chances.

A Ferrari one-two in Austin! Nothing could have been better to clearly put the Scuderia back in the race for the Constructors’ title.

At this pace, Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, a duo much stronger than Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez, will soon take second place from Red Bull. After the United States, Ferrari stands at 496 points, only 8 behind Red Bull.

With a relatively average weekend for McLaren, with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, Ferrari also gained 27 points on the leaders, who are now 48 points ahead.

However, Ferrari’s team principal, Fred Vasseur, insisted that the team is focused on pure performance rather than its position in the Constructors’ standings, while Leclerc emphasized that Ferrari is still aiming for the title with five races to go.

But aiming for it doesn’t necessarily mean focusing on it, according to Vasseur. To achieve it, performance is key, everywhere.

“We are not thinking about the championship, and I want to keep the team in this mindset because I think it’s important to focus on pure performance, session by session, and not have the championship in mind.”

“A week or two ago, everyone was talking about McLaren, before that it was Mercedes, and before that it was Red Bull. We need to take things with a bit of perspective; we have never discussed anything like that because we know it’s still far away.”

“If something (the title) can happen in the end, it will be more due to day-by-day performance than a focus on the overall championship.”

“We know very well that Mexico will be a completely different challenge. We’ll start from scratch, and you can have a completely different result in Mexico.”

Regarding the current mindset within Ferrari, Vasseur spoke positively about the team’s attitude, focused on continuing to improve race by race.

“What I want is for people to take more risks and have the ability to take those risks. We are in this mindset and approach. Of course, we need to improve, and we’ve made some steps to do so, but it’s important to keep that mentality.”

“Even when you get a good result, it’s not the end of the story. Coming back to the factory on Monday with a long list of things to improve, even when you win, is a good mentality.”
