Norris Penalized as Verstappen Secures Tough Podium Finish

Verstappen: A ‘tough battle’ due to ‘challenges in defending’

21/10/2024

Max Verstappen fought hard against Norris, battling brake issues and aggressive defenses to secure a crucial podium finish.

Max Verstappen made the best of the Austin weekend by gaining two points on Lando Norris during the Sprint and three more during the race. To achieve this, the Red Bull driver played his most extreme cards, pushing his rival off track on the first lap and again towards the end of the race.

It was a successful move, as despite the illegal maneuver, it was Norris who received a 5-second penalty, allowing the Dutchman to finish on the podium. Verstappen explained that he struggled with grip on his car, which led to his aggressive defensive moves.

“It was a tough race, I didn’t have the pace to attack, unlike yesterday. I had braking issues and found it hard to defend because when someone attacked me, I couldn’t brake late enough,” Verstappen said.

Asked about his battle with Norris, the Dutchman simply admitted he did everything to maintain his podium spot: “It was a tough fight, I did everything to keep him behind, and finishing on the podium is a good result.”

Regarding Norris’s penalty, he declined to comment: “I have my opinion, but I don’t need to share it. I’ll let the stewards do their job. It’s another race where we’ll learn a lot.”
