FIA Resolves Red Bull Ride Height Dispute Without Inquiry

19/10/2024

The FIA closes Red Bull controversy, citing no evidence for retrospective action on their ride height adjustment system.

The FIA has taken measures with Red Bull to ensure that the ride height adjustment system, located inside the cockpit of the RB20 rather than externally like other cars, is sealed when the vehicle is in Parc Fermé. Nikolas Tombazis, the FIA’s single-seater technical director, considers the matter closed.

“During the previous race, it was brought to our attention that certain designs might allow changes to the front ride height, something some refer to as a ‘skirt’, while in Parc Fermé,” Tombazis explained. “We had no indication or evidence that anyone was doing anything of the sort.”

“Such an action would clearly be illegal under Parc Fermé regulations. But as I said, we had no clear indication that anyone was engaging in such activities, so we stated that from this race onwards, there must be no possibility of making such adjustments.”

“If a team has a design that allows for a quick change in this height, it must be sealed to prevent access to it during Parc Fermé. I believe all teams have complied with this rule, and as far as we’re concerned, the situation is reasonably under control.”

“I don’t think this is a topic going forward. I believe we’ve done everything necessary to prevent any accusations, but of course, it’s a tight championship, and people tend to get excited about the other teams’ cars.”

“We can’t definitively close the book on previous races or the insinuations that emerge in such a highly competitive environment, but under the current circumstances, we consider this a non-issue, yes.”

Zak Brown and Frédéric Vasseur have questioned whether Red Bull may have used this system in the past. However, Tombazis doesn’t believe the FIA will investigate the potential impact on previous races, citing the difficulty in gathering further evidence.

“Honestly, no. We’re talking about… a few millimetres here, potentially. These are very, very small margins.”

“I don’t think it’s something we could feasibly check. But as I said, we have no indication, no evidence, or anything else to suggest that something untoward happened in the past.”
