Mercedes shows renewed competitiveness as George Russell claims a front-row start for the Sprint race in Austin.
George Russell will start from second place in the Austin Sprint, lining up alongside Max Verstappen. The Mercedes F1 driver is pleased with his strong performance and the return to the front row.
“I’m very happy with how today went. It’s been a while since we qualified on the front row,” Russell said, noting that he believes Lewis Hamilton could have done even better.
“We can be satisfied with the progress we’ve made. The upgrade package we’ve brought here seems to be working well, although we were a bit surprised by our competitiveness today.”
“The Sprint qualifying was tricky, but I managed to put together a good lap in SQ3. The final sector was particularly strong, and that’s what allowed us to take second place.”
“Lewis was very fast today, and he was unlucky with the yellow flag. We both should have been up there, but it’s great that, as a team, we’re back in the mix.”
“It’s clear we’re very close to several other teams, including Red Bull, Ferrari, and McLaren. I hope we can carry this momentum through the weekend and be fighting at the front.”
Hamilton was “on track for pole position”
Lewis Hamilton was frustrated by the timing, as the yellow flag caused by Franco Colapinto cost him valuable time: “It’s really unfortunate today because I was unlucky with the yellow flag. I was four-tenths up on my lap and on track for pole position, but that’s how it goes.”
“The positive thing is that we seem to have made a step forward with the car. The update we’ve brought here worked well, and I’m really grateful to everyone at the factory for their hard work.”
“The last few races haven’t been easy, but everyone has done an excellent job in bringing this evolution. We also worked hard after the first free practice session to improve the car ahead of Sprint qualifying.”
“Sprint weekends add an extra level of risk with the second Parc Fermé, but as soon as we hit the track, I knew we had made the right choices. Despite today’s disappointment, we have another chance tomorrow, and we’ll give it our best.”
