Norris Ricciardo Not to Blame if Title Slip Happens

Norris won’t blame Ricciardo if he loses the title by one point

18/10/2024

Lando Norris downplays Ricciardo’s fastest lap impact, addressing the recent rule changes and the potential title loss scenario.

The FIA has changed the rules regarding the awarding of a point for the fastest lap in a race for next season. This point will be removed.

For many, this is clearly a reaction to what happened in Singapore, where Daniel Ricciardo took the fastest lap from Lando Norris. A farewell gift for the Australian, which had the beneficial effect of helping Max Verstappen, Red Bull’s main team driver, in the championship.

If Norris were to lose the championship due to this point lost in Singapore, would it be hard for him to accept? Does the rule change feel like a bitter move, indirectly endorsing some form of collusion between the two Red Bull teams?

“No. I wouldn’t see that as the reason. I’d probably blame other things this season that could’ve been better, rather than Daniel getting the fastest lap in his final race.”

“Yes, it could come down to that at the end of the year. To just one point. And if that’s the case, so be it. But I don’t think that’s… People have been doing this for years. I know it’s just a weird timing, and people jump on things quickly, but it depends if it’s… The circumstances in which it happened, I guess, are unique. Daniel knew it was his last race.”

“And I wouldn’t say it’s a good way to end your career, because I don’t think there’s any way to finish that feels satisfying. But yes, if it weren’t just him going for the fastest lap, then it does raise more of a question mark and something, I think, we would have probably questioned as a team.”

“They’re changing the rules, but for next year. However, if it became a recurring issue, if it happened again this weekend or next, then I think that’s when we’d question it much more deeply.”

“But given how things played out, I don’t think there’s anything to argue about. I don’t want to say I accept it simply because it was his last race, because it has nothing to do with his championship or their championship.”

“I would never blame Daniel. I would never hold it against them. But if it was done with the intention of such an act, then obviously that’s something we wouldn’t agree with. And I don’t think it’s something Formula 1 would agree with either.”

“So the answer is no, I wouldn’t blame losing my title on one point, if that were to happen, on this. It would be due to other reasons.”
