Liam Lawson defends Red Bull’s intense programme, crediting its toughness for preparing drivers to survive in Formula 1.
Liam Lawson had to wait a long time before getting his full-time opportunity, which he will finally have this weekend in Austin with Red Bull F1. Despite the challenges, he remains a staunch defender of the Red Bull programme and the difficulties it forces drivers to overcome.
“Everyone has their opinion on the Red Bull programme, particularly the junior programme and its intensity,” Lawson acknowledges. “At the time, I probably felt that it was too tough at certain points, but honestly, it’s what prepared all of us who went through it to reach Formula 1.”
For the New Zealander, the programme’s rigorous nature serves as excellent preparation for F1. He goes further by explaining that the tough selection process is still less harsh than the reality of the top tier of motorsport.
“If you can’t survive this part of the programme, if you can’t endure it at that age, you’ll never survive in Formula 1 anyway. It’s something I’m really grateful for today, having done those five races last year.”
“I don’t think I would have been able to perform at a decent level without going through that programme. I can’t imagine what it’s like to enter F1 without having faced that pressure from such a young age. The expectations placed on us help prepare us for Formula 1.”
