Adrian Newey believes Red Bull is ready to succeed alone as they approach the end of a long-term collaboration.
Adrian Newey, the most successful designer in Formula 1, explained how his feeling that Red Bull wanted to prove it could “succeed on its own” contributed to his decision to leave.
Earlier this season, Red Bull announced that Newey would depart the team in spring 2025, ending a nearly two-decade period that saw the team secure 13 titles.
The Briton has since signed a deal with Aston Martin F1 to oversee its technical department as a technical partner.
Rumors emerged suggesting that Newey’s discomfort with the tension at Red Bull before the current season played a role in his impending departure.
Newey, however, insists that his desire for a new challenge, as F1 prepares for a regulation overhaul in 2026, was the driving force behind his decision.
“There comes a point where I feel the need for new challenges. The team has reached a good level of maturity. Red Bull is a very mature engineering organization, as is the rest of the team.”
“So, in a way, I’ve kind of done my part and started to feel like we had somewhat reached the end of our collaboration.”
“I think the guys also felt they perhaps needed to show they could do it on their own. So I thought: ‘Well, okay, let’s give them a chance and me a new challenge.’ Red Bull wants to show it can succeed on its own, without me, and that’s understandable.”
Newey, 65, admitted that he could never have imagined still being involved in the sport at his current age as he prepares to take on a new full-time role.
“I think if I go back 15 years, certainly 20 years, and ask myself: ‘Would I want to work beyond 60?’ Probably not. ‘Would I want to work beyond 65?’ Absolutely not.”
“But then you get there, and there are several factors. First, maybe—I’m not sure—maybe I’m guilty of defining myself too much by my work, and I worry about what I would do if I wasn’t doing it.”
“But I don’t think that’s really the case for me. It’s mainly because I love the challenge, I truly enjoy it. It’s the career I’ve dreamed of since I was a child, and I’ve been fortunate enough to live it. I’m still enjoying it.”
“It’s simply about finding the right balance so that it doesn’t consume you, because Formula 1 can be all-consuming. And with that, of course, come trade-offs, especially in terms of family life, friends, and so on. That’s where the difficulty lies.”
