Carlos Sainz expressed surprise at Mattia Binotto’s claim that Ferrari wouldn’t have signed Lewis Hamilton alongside Charles Leclerc.
Recently, Mattia Binotto stated that he would not have paired Lewis Hamilton with Charles Leclerc at Ferrari, believing the young Monegasque to be the driver to lead the Scuderia to future victories. This view seemed to surprise Carlos Sainz.
“Binotto said he wouldn’t have signed Lewis?” Sainz remarked in surprise, before choosing to remain silent on the matter. “I won’t get involved in that; I’ll keep my opinion to myself and maybe share it over dinner one day!”
The Spaniard had previously acknowledged that he understood Ferrari’s willingness to replace him with Hamilton, as signing a seven-time world champion is an opportunity hard to refuse. He also believes the partnership between the Briton and Leclerc will work well: “They are two great drivers; I’m sure they’ll have fun.”
Sainz has always maintained that he would give 100% until the end of his Ferrari contract, and he confirmed this, though admitting that he’s increasingly thinking about his future team: “Every day, I feel more motivated by the Williams project. My body craves a change, but I want to win one more race before saying goodbye to Ferrari.”
“Until the end of the year, no matter the cost, we need to finish strong with podiums or a win. Right now, my focus is on Ferrari, but I want to achieve the same, or even more, with my new team. Of the remaining Grands Prix, Mexico and Las Vegas offer my best chances to win another race.”
