Andretti may enter F1 following a U.S. agreement amid scrutiny over alleged anticompetitive actions.
What Does Andretti’s F1 Project Entail Following Michael Andretti’s Step Back?
Some interpret this as a signal to FOM and Liberty Media to facilitate the entry of the American team into F1, as the figurehead was too divisive for CEO Greg Maffei and his team.
With Andretti now serving merely as a consultant, the group promises clarifications on the F1 project in the coming weeks. However, this might also be related to his father, Mario Andretti’s, own political manoeuvres!
Formula 1 is currently under the scrutiny of the U.S. government. A Senate hearing might be on the horizon as part of an investigation into how Andretti-Cadillac was barred from the sport by Liberty Media, the American owner of F1.
Michael Andretti, who maintains strong relationships, particularly among Republicans, reportedly did everything to politically resolve the entire affair.
The U.S. investigation has reportedly uncovered evidence, including a WhatsApp group with (Stefano) Domenicali and some current team bosses, which proves illegal agreements. The investigation also suggests alleged anticompetitive behaviours.
It is thus intriguing that Andretti, at 62 years old, is taking a significant step back from his Andretti Global empire – in terms of ownership, control, and even daily involvement.
“Decades of racing at full throttle do not come without sacrifices and, after much reflection over the past few months, I have decided to step back,” he stated in an open letter.
“While I make this decision for myself, my family, and this team, I know it may come as a shock to many, especially to you, the fans, my extended family.”
“I am excited to spend more time with my beautiful family, including my 10-year-old twins, to embrace my new title of Nonno, and to explore new personal pursuits and with my other businesses. So, this is not goodbye, just turning the page.”
With Michael Andretti now having stepped away from his company and acting only as a strategic advisor, is this the first step toward a deal with F1 to quench the U.S. legal action?
